Pittsburgh native Akil Drake died in a building explosion in Youngstown.

An unfortunate incident occurred in Youngstown, Ohio, on May 28, 2024, when a building explosion claimed the life of 27-year-old Akil Drake. Akil, a native of Pittsburgh, was an employee of Chase Bank, which was located at the bottom of the building. Seven individuals were injured in the explosion, with one still in critical condition as of Tuesday.

The building housed a Chase Bank and an apartment complex, with six of the injured individuals being bank employees. The cause of the explosion remains unknown, but gas has been shut off on the entire block as a precaution while investigations continue. Witnesses described the explosion as feeling like a mini earthquake.

Akil Drake was remembered for his hard work, determination, and infectious smile. He graduated from Penn Hills High School in 2015 and later worked on shooting, editing, and producing football film study videos at Youngstown State University, where he majored in finance. His former coach at Penn Hills, John Peterman, described him as the type of player every coach wanted, while his colleague, Mark Preto, recalled his dedication and desire to succeed.

Statements of condolences were issued by both the Penn Hills School District and Youngstown State. The community is currently mourning the loss of Akil Drake and praying for the recovery of those injured in the explosion. The National Transportation Safety Board has also launched an investigation into the incident.
