Minnesota DFL calls for Sen. Nicole Mitchell’s resignation after arrest.

In a recent development, the chair of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), Ken Martin, has called for the resignation of state Senator Nicole Mitchell following her arrest on burglary charges last month. The call for resignation comes after the conclusion of the Minnesota legislative session, during which Mitchell’s vote provided the DFL with a one-vote advantage to pass several priority spending bills and policies.

Republicans at the Capitol had previously called for Mitchell’s resignation following the news of her arrest at her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes. Martin stated in a news release that Mitchell should be held accountable for her actions, which he believes have become a distraction for her district and the Legislature.

DFL Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, however, has not called for Mitchell’s resignation, stating that Mitchell deserves a chance to defend herself in court and ethics proceedings. Murphy emphasized that her job is to ensure the caucus is in a strong position to govern for the people of Minnesota.

The urgency for Mitchell’s resignation now lies in the fact that if she resigns by the end of next week, a special election could be held on November’s ballot, potentially resulting in higher turnout than usual for a winner-take-all race for the Senate majority.

Mitchell has previously stated that she will not resign, citing a lack of knowledge about all the facts regarding the alleged break-in. She claimed she was trying to retrieve items of her late father’s, including his ashes. Her attorney has requested a postponement of the next hearing in her criminal case to July 1 due to a scheduling conflict.

Mitchell also faces ongoing ethics complaint proceedings in the Senate, which could be postponed. She has been barred from committee and DFL caucus assignments but was allowed to cast floor votes in the final weeks of the legislative session.

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson criticized Martin for waiting to seek Mitchell’s resignation, stating that the Democrats abused their political majority and embraced Mitchell because it served their political purposes.

Governor Tim Walz also expressed his concerns about the incident involving Mitchell, stating that public servants should be held to a higher standard. He believes if it were him, he would focus on his personal matters and leave the situation to someone else.
