The incident took place inside an apartment complex on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue South, where Jimale was fatally shot. Another person was injured inside the apartment, and a Minneapolis police officer, Jamal Mitchell, was also shot and killed while rendering aid to someone. The cause of death for both Jimale and Mitchell was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds.

The shooting sparked a police response, and officers opened fire on the suspect, who died at the scene. The apartment complex was searched, and Jimale, who may have been a resident of the building, was found. Outside the apartment, a man was found shot inside his vehicle. A Minneapolis firefighter was also injured but released from the hospital after receiving non-life-threatening treatment.
